The calculator converts IELTS, CELPIP, and PTE scores to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) levels, which are used by IRCC to assess language ability for Express Entry, PNP, and other immigration programs.
CLB scores are used in Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades), most Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and RNIP. Minimum CLB requirements vary by program and NOC code.
For the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, the minimum is CLB 7 in all four skills. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) requires CLB 7 for NOC TEER 0 or 1, and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 occupations. Higher CLB scores earn more CRS points.
Language is one of the biggest CRS point sources — up to 160 points for first official language and 24 for the second. Each CLB level above the minimum adds points. CLB 9 in all four skills (equivalent to IELTS 7.0) is the sweet spot for competitive draws.
The calculator uses IRCC's published conversion tables and is regularly updated when IRCC releases new equivalency charts. However, always verify with an official IRCC resource or a regulated immigration consultant (RCIC) before submitting your application.
All four skills are assessed: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Each skill is converted to a CLB level independently, and your overall CLB is based on the skill-by-skill conversion — you cannot average across skills.
